It seemed like Drew was confused about what was going on, which in turn confused Connor. What could possibly be unclear about what he just said? Connor was an extremely direct person; he always said what he meant, albeit politely. Dade and Rose were both particularly blunt and often ill-tempered, but Connor had a more even temper and used more diplomatic language. He supposed it was probably a relief to their father, who struggled to deal with Rose and who was beginning to struggle to deal with Dade, as the youngest Farnon picked up the bad habits that Rose was teaching him at school. That was why he didn’t hold it against Drew that his family was inherently structured incorrectly. Dade and Rose probably would have. Well, Rose actually probably wouldn’t have; she was very close to Marissa Kendrick who was, in turn, close to Drew’s parents through some sort of familial relation. But Connor was sure Dade would take his side on this.

Except, Holland -

Anyway, Connor didn’t have the time to devote thoughts to the perpetually strangely dressed sixth year boy that Dade was oddly fascinated by. He had, in front of him, a very confused first-year boy who was struggling to understand the things Connor was saying. Maybe it was because Drew’s ‘parents’ had brainwashed him into thinking that it was acceptable for McKindy to teach at RMI. Which made sense, of course, now that Connor had thought of it. Poor Drew had grown up in a cocoon of impropriety, and didn’t know any better. Helping him see the error of McKindy’s ways was probably an extended task, one the Connor probably did not have the time and energy for. On the other hand, Connor thought, Claudia was obviously going out on a limb for Marley as an act of social good. Perhaps he ought to do something like that as well.

“Well the rest of the professors,” Connor paused, wondering how he could phrase it tactfully. “They’re just more qualified to work with students,” he said. “They’re more like what teachers ought to be. A lot of them are married, even. So nobody needs to worry about them,” again, diplomatic language was something Connor was struggling with, which was unusual for him. “Making an example of their lifestyle choices,” was what he ended up with. It was perhaps a little more opaque than he typically went when explaining this sort of thing, but in order for Connor to continue to be in a place where he could influence Drew, the third-year knew that he had to keep Drew from reacting too strongly to the facts of the situation.
