If Connor had thought he was confused before, he had clearly underestimated the situation because now Drew was talking about how Professor McKindy had taught at a bunch of other schools. Was he trying to validate RMI’s choice in hiring someone like McKindy on the basis that other schools had done so as well? The real question, in Connor’s personal opinion, was why Professor McKindy had left the other schools. Because it sounded a lot like there had been some sort of issue, that he’d taught at so many schools. Especially if it was the second time at RMI. Connor didn’t think much of Headmaster Bonilla, and he wouldn’t be surprised if the Headmaster was willing to ignore something like a prior dismissal when hiring. Maybe he hadn’t even noticed. But it did sound and awful lot like there had been some schools who had some problem with McKindy, and for all that Connor didn’t particularly approve of the man, he did seem to be otherwise quite competent.
Although what had he been doing at a Muggle school. Anyway -
Wait, Drew had said that Professor McKindy and Mr. Tennant were married? That couldn’t be true - was that even legal? Connor didn’t know a whole lot about law, actually, but he was pretty sure that only women and men got married so unless there was something about Professor McKindy that he didn’t particularly want to know about, there was something going desperately wrong here. Maybe it was an American thing, but that still didn’t sit quite right with Connor. Surely someone would have mentioned if something like that were legal in America. Connor was fourteen years old, he would have known about it by now.
But before Connor could dispute Drew on his claims, the younger boy responded with a particularly rude way of stating what Connor had been politely talking about. Connor sighed internally. It wasn’t his fault that someone had made the rather questionable decision of letting Professor McKindy teach at RMI, and it certainly didn’t mean that he was the one who was messed up.
“It is perfectly reasonable to ask that people who teach at a school maintain family-friendly lifestyles,” Connor said, calmly and placatingly. “I’m sure that is why Professor McKindy has had such a tumultuous career. If he had chosen something more appropriate I’m sure that there would have been less trouble.”
