Drew
Down and out?

There were a couple of seconds before Drew really processed what Connor had said. Then Drew clenched his fists. No one had ever actually said it about his family before as far as Drew could remember, but he still knew what that word meant. Who the heck, in this year, said stuff like that?

He thought about what to do next. If he was Kit he would probably launch himself over the sofa, shrieking, and start clawing at Connor, possibly while bludgeoning him with the nearest object. Drew didn’t want to do that, for a couple of reasons. First because he would definitely get in trouble if he hit Connor, and because they were in the Common Room it would definitely be Aaron who showed up first. Drew didn’t want to get in trouble with his stepdad-slash-grandfather, and he was pretty sure that Aaron didn’t want to deal with that either. Aaron seemed to do his best to avoid Drew in class, which worked out fine for both of them. Drew was cool with not acknowledging the fact that they were related during Spellwork.

Also, Connor would probably take it as evidence of Drew’s bad breeding if Drew punched him. Drew didn’t want to make Dad and Aaron look bad. Connor would probably be all like, “Drew is a punching savage because he was raised by two men,” and that wouldn’t help anything. Oh yeah and because violence was bad and not a way of solving problems and stuff. Drew was pretty sure that some of his other family members had other opinions, but Dad was really clear on the whole “don’t hit people” thing.

Okay, he couldn’t punch Connor. So he could tell on him, but that felt really lame. Not that Drew thought there was anything wrong with telling on someone when they did bad things, but it probably wouldn’t be very effective. Maybe Drew would publish a callout article in Rocky Voices. He could submit an anonymous tip to Heather Bartel’s gossip column. Either way Drew definitely didn’t want to keep talking to him so he was going to walk away now.

Wait a minute. He had an idea so good that a cartoon lightbulb probably should’ve popped up next to his head and lit up and gone ding!

The first-year adjusted his guitar case’s strap so that the guitar was kind of horizontal on his back instead of vertical. “You’re a real ass,” Drew said. It was not a word that he was supposed to use, but Connor had used a way worse word, so he thought it was called for. Drew strode around the sofa toward the boys’ stairs, making sure to hit Connor hard in the back of the head with the body of the guitar. The case was magically padded, so the instrument would be totally fine. The strings vibrated in what Drew felt was a particularly jubilant sound.
