Drew
I think I can change that

Drew was almost at the stairs. He was hoping that the stairs wouldn’t screw up today and mess up his exit. They had messed up a few times for Dade lately. The older boy would go up the stairs to the boys’ dorms, just like he normally would, and then sometimes the stairs would just randomly turn into a trapdoor like they did when you went up the wrong stairs. Drew couldn’t figure out why that was happening—maybe the magic just felt especially pranky sometimes? Maybe Shifty was doing it somehow?—but he had made sure to tell Headmaster Bonilla that it wasn’t Dade’s fault. It wasn’t fair for Dade to get in trouble when he hadn’t been doing anything wrong. Anyway the staircase errors seemed random except that they only happened to Dade, but there was no reason they couldn’t happen to Drew as far as he could tell.

But as it turned out, Drew didn’t get to find out if the stairs were working today or not, because Connor started talking again. Drew was going to ignore him, because he was pretty sure it was just going to be the same elitist crap that Connor had been saying before. And it mostly was. He was just whining about being hit with the guitar even though Drew hadn’t even hit him very hard. It was just, like, a bump. A hard bump. On the back of the head. And Connor looked like he was going to cry. What a big baby.

But then Connor called Drew a word that no one had ever called him.

White people were not supposed to say that word. It was the worst word that someone could say if they weren’t black, because it meant something really bad in that context. (Drew was half black but he didn’t say it either because the idea of that felt weird. His family and most of his friends were all white, and the friends who weren’t white didn’t use that word either, so it would just seem weird.) It was such a bad word that other people couldn’t even say it under any circumstances ever.

Drew whirled around. Okay never mind about all that “hitting is bad” stuff and all that “turn the other cheek” stuff, Drew couldn’t not do something about this. In one movement, he slung the guitar off his shoulder and put it down (not too hard, it had already been a slight casualty in this encounter) and nearly sprinted across the room so that he was back at the couch and then started hitting Connor.
