Then don’t worry, be happy

Drew shook his head. “No, it’s never happened to me. Or,” and then he didn’t keep talking for a second, because the thing that came after ‘or’ was ‘or anyone else as far as I know,’ and he didn’t want to make Dade feel singled out. “Or Huburt, as far as I know,” he added, since it was relevant. That was better.

He thought about pointing out that they didn’t know for sure that Drew was having a problem with the stairs today, but if he did that then Dade might want him to check, and Drew didn’t really want to check in case it sent him to the Headmaster’s office. Drew had gotten in big trouble last year and he didn’t like it very much, so he wanted to avoid doing dumb things that would get him in trouble. At the very least he should probably save up his getting-in-troubleness so that things wouldn’t be too bad if he had an actual good reason to get in trouble, like the thing with Connor. Hopefully something like that wouldn’t happen again (Connor had apologized and he seemed kind of actually sorry) but you never knew.

Anyway the stairs. Maybe they had been trying to get Dade again, but they missed and got Huburt? That seemed unlikely, though. So then maybe Dade was right and someone had tried to fix them so that he didn’t trigger the spell anymore, but they had done it wrong so now Huburt was making the spell go off. Or maybe the stairs had just suddenly decided they were done pranking Dade and were gonna target Huburt instead. Maybe pranking wasn’t the right word—after all, these weren’t the Aquila stairs. It was almost as if—

“It’s like the stair magic gets confused about who’s a boy and who’s a girl,” Drew said thoughtfully. “Like maybe today they thought Huburt was a girl, and other times they think you’re a girl. Only, I don’t know how that could happen.” It was part of the school’s magic, and Drew was pretty sure you couldn’t lie to the school or trick it. The stairs were supposed to be like the age line that kept first and second years from taking the elevator to Pearl Street. Even an Aging Potion couldn’t fool that. Although Drew knew for a fact that the staff could override it, like when Aaron had taken him for ice cream after the fight with Connor last year. He would bet that the staff could override the staircase gender thing too, because if there was an emergency in one of the dorms then the Head of House or the Medic should be able to get there even if they were the opposite sex.

“Yeah, it’s weird.” Drew didn’t think the school could do anything, like, mean to the students. That was way too much power for the building to have, especially if it could just decide that it wasn’t ... more
