Drew was three hundred percent sure that he had never seen Dade laugh this hard. Actually he was pretty sure that he had never seen Dade express any emotion beside annoyance this hard before. It made it funnier, somehow, and there was a lot more laughing before there was talking again. Drew went down the girls’ stairs to stand with Dade, because if a Prefect walked in they probably wouldn’t care that Drew had only been on the stairs as a test of the broken magic.

He knew the school probably better than any of the other students, but Drew didn’t pretend to understand how the magic that ran it worked. He was pretty sure that the school was kind of alive, like how brooms and other enchanted things were kind of alive. The staff quarters always knew to make them a dining room for Christmas, even though Drew was pretty sure Dad and Aaron didn’t tell the building that they were having fifteen (or however many) people over for dinner. It just knew what they needed, and made it happen.

“Yeah, that’s probably it,” Drew agreed with Dade, because he couldn’t see anything else making sense. The boys stairs dropped Huburt (boy) and Connor (boy) but not Dade (boy), and the girls stairs hadn’t dropped Drew (boy) like they were supposed to. “I mean, if it weren’t for you I’d say the stairs were switched. I guess it would help if some girls tested it, or Maverick.” He glanced at the Common Room door like doing so would make the seventh-year appear. Drew had been helping with sets for Little Shop when he got tired of rehearsing, which meant building things with Maverick. Maverick did not like to talk as much as Drew, but they got along well enough. Mave was like Marissa’s friend Holland, but different: Maverick lived in the girls’ dorms but he mostly looked like a guy except that sometimes he wore girl clothes, and his pronouns were ‘he’ and ‘him.’ Maverick could go up both staircases normally, and Drew wondered if either of them would mess up for him today.

With the information they had, all Drew could safely say that the boys’ stairs were dropping boys except for Dade, and that the girls’ stairs weren’t dropping boys. So weird: that was three stair mix-ups to one stair win. “Or maybe the stairs are just trying to make it up to you by triggering for everyone else instead today. The school magic can be weird like that sometimes.”
