“Yeah, it’s weird.” Drew didn’t think the school could do anything, like, mean to the students. That was way too much power for the building to have, especially if it could just decide that it wasn’t going to cooperate with you for no reason like it had maybe done with Dade. Like what if the school suddenly went, “Hey I don’t want this person to be allowed into any of the bathrooms”? Then what would you do? It didn’t seem like the staff could totally control the school magic…

Wait, maybe the house elves could? Or at least the elves might have a better understanding of how the building worked, because their magic worked with it. Drew resolved to ask during his next interview, and to ask Kizzy the next time he saw her. Kizzy was amazing and probably the wisest out of all of the elves at RMI, and she was always really nice to Drew and Madeleine. She’d answer his questions.

How do you think the stairs work? Like how do they know what your gender is?

Drew considered. He had no idea. Up until now he had never thought too hard about the stairs and how they worked. Well, okay, that wasn’t totally true: when the stairs had started messing up for Dade, Drew had thought about why that might be happening. In fact he had asked Aaron about the stairs and Dade, because Aaron was 1) really good at spellwork and 2) the Cetus Head of House so it was kind of his business. Aaron had agreed to take a look, but he hadn’t found anything wrong with the magic, so they still didn’t have a good answer for what was happening

But Drew hadn’t thought about the staircases in terms of gender, just about Dade specifically. Drew hadn’t done much thinking about gender, overall. He knew that there were people like Holland and Maverick whose genders weren’t the normal ones, and he knew from Marissa that Holland’s gender was non-binary, which meant not-a-boy-or-a-girl. He wasn’t totally sure how that worked, but Drew figured that it wasn’t any of his business so it didn’t really matter.

“I think they just know?” Drew said, like it was a question, because he wasn’t sure. “Like how the elevator just knows how old you are, or like how the staff quarters just know when we’re having people over and need an extra room. The stairs can just tell if you’re a boy or a girl… or whatever,” he added, to be inclusive. Drew thought about that a little bit more. Hang on a second. He took another moment to figure out how to phrase his question. “Do you think the stairs might be messing up for you because of gender?”

  • When Drew mentioned Maverick, Dade wrinkled his nose. He didn’t know how to feel about Maverick, because he was technically like Holland in that he could go up both sides of the stairs and in that he ... more

Huh. Dade hadn’t known that the staff quarters just made new rooms when they were needed. There was technically an Age Line around the elevator, which was a spell, but if Drew said the elevator... more

Okay well now Dade sounded kind of mad and that wasn’t what Drew had wanted, like, at all. He felt like Dade had maybe proved the opposite of the point he was trying to make, though. Playing dress-up ... more

Dade didn’t say anything about else about the gender stuff. He also didn’t apologize for getting mad at Drew, but Drew was used to Dade not really apologizing. Sometimes they would get in unimportant ... more
