Who hurt my Holland?

Danny had always thrived on routine. A schedule of classes helped him focus, a regular exercise regime kept him active and alert, and predictable periods of leisure time helped him relax. Before midterm, he’d developed a particular routine of returning to Lyra commonroom after his potions classes to meet up with Holland. He’d fully expected this pattern to continue with their return to school, so he was surprised when he whistled his way into the commons to find their usual sofa empty. After a moment's hesitation, Danny continued on to his bedroom, instead. He didn’t expect Holland to be there (they weren’t) but he did switch out his potions textbook from his bag, and collected the book about magical methods of communication Holland had gifted him for Christmas before sauntering back down to the commons main.

Settled comfortably at one end of the sofa, Danny had read the introduction and begun the first chapter when he looked up - as he had done every time a student had come into the room - to see Holland at last. His smile (that appeared automatically whenever Holland did) faltered, however; something about Holland’s stance triggered concern. Danny had been close friends with Holland for years. He knew that when they were upset, Holland would become withdrawn, holding their limbs close against them, moving with purpose but in tight, restrictive motions, like they were doing now. A glance at Holland’s face revealed a shuttered expression that pushed Danny to his feet and propelled him towards them, his book lying temporarily forgotten on the seat. “What happened?” he asked.

Something was wrong. He didn’t know who or what had upset Holland, but he wanted to find out, and he wanted to fix it. Yet stronger than the need to set their world to rights again was a compulsion to comfort Holland. Instinctively Danny had moved towards them, but he didn’t know the origin of their distress; he didn’t know if holding them would be welcome at this moment. Tentatively he gently touched their arm. “Are you okay?”
