Then you might be disappointed

Danny hadn’t known, based on his rapid pivot from concern to shock to outrage. Even last year when they had argued and yelled at each other, Holland didn’t think they had ever seen him this mad, but then again, Holland didn’t think they had ever been this angry before either. Then Danny seemed to refocus on comforting them, and Holland was reminded again of flirting in his family’s library, and how quickly he had switched from pureblood heir Dardanius Dubois to just Danny.

You’re shaking.” Holland already knew that, and they felt too angry and unnerved and sick to reassure Danny that they were fine, so they just shrugged. This happened sometimes when they were this upset; the shaking would stop when they calmed down, and until then there wasn’t much to do about it.

Holland didn’t resist as Danny led them from the common room to one of the practice rooms. As the door shut and the soundproofing spells activated, Holland started to feel more like themself, relaxing into the knowledge that they were in a secure location with one of the people they trusted most. Danny was still holding their hand, and Holland took his other hand, further grounding themself with the second point of contact. They took a few deep breaths. That was better. Their voice sounded almost normal this time as they answered Danny’s question.

“It wasn’t the spell she used on you,” they said, certain that that was the first conclusion Danny had jumped to. Having no knowledge of what, precisely, the hex Claudia had placed on Danny was designed to do, Holland couldn’t say for certain which they would have preferred, but they were inclined to think there were few worse mental experiences than what they had just endured. “At least I don’t think it was. It made me experience what she was thinking and feeling. For a couple seconds I believed the things she does, about us dating… and about me, specifically.” Holland’s tone implied that none of those beliefs were positive—an implication they proceeded to make clear by describing Danny’s sister’s beliefs, alternating between hesitant eye contact and looking down at their clasped hands. They needed him to understand: even if it hadn’t lasted long, Claudia had made Holland disgusted with the things that were central to their sense of self. They weren’t overreacting.
