Even though Danny sounded like he was asking, Holland didn’t cast a cheering charm. This was partially because they didn’t have their wand on them and emotional manipulation seemed a risky thing to try wandless, and partially because Holland was uncomfortable with magic that induced artificial feelings. Holland had once read a text which compared cheering charms to Muggle antidepressants; the paper concluded that they were equivalent, but Holland strongly disagreed. Ethically, a cheering charm was, they thought, more like a lobotomy in terms of reducing negative feelings, because it removed the option for the person to feel differently. Cheering charms probably affected the higher-order thought processes that made negative feelings possible, and Holland couldn’t see why anyone would want that. Sadness was functional.

I broke up with Marissa. It sucks.

Maybe Holland should’ve been surprised by the news after all of the canoodling last night, but they didn’t feel very surprised. Danny had Cetus-strong convictions about his future, given his upbringing, and Marissa didn’t seem to fit well into the Dubois Master Plan. And just in general, Marissa and Danny had never seemed especially compatible. They were both popular, good people, but Marissa seemed like a bit much for Danny.

“That does suck,” Holland agreed, because breakups were hard even if you were the one initiating them. They’d been sad about breaking up with Ruben even though it had completely been their call. There was something about closing a door and not seeing any windows springing open that just made you ache.

For a few moments, Holland hovered between commiseration and questions. Curiosity won the day. “Why?” they asked. Holland could see the reasons why Danny and Marissa dating might not be sustainable, but they didn’t expect Danny to have the wherewithal to realize that when he probably wasn’t thinking with his brain, exactly. “I mean, if you don’t want to talk about it, that’s fine. I could go, or we could eat ice cream and cut Marissa out of all your pictures, if you want.” Holland wasn’t sure there were pictures, but it seemed like an appropriate Hollywood post-breakup activity. Although if there were magically-developed photos, the figures in them might object to the cutting. Or photo-Marissa might have already left out of annoyance with photo-Danny. “But I’m happy to listen if you do want to talk.”

      • That's forward planning - Danny, Mon Aug 7 10:50
“Why?” Holland asked. Danny was surprised by the immediate bluntness of the question but it wore off quickly; It was not incongruent with Holland’s character for them to want to understand causality. ... more

            • That sounds stressful - Holland, Mon Aug 7 21:50
Thankfully, Danny looked surprised and laughed a little, which Holland took to mean that he’d received their response well. “No worries. It helps to talk it through sometimes,” Holland agreed. Or to... more

Emmett did as Holland and Danny told him. This was not an unusual phenomenon, as Emmett almost always did what Holland and Danny told him. (In fact, the "almost" was mostly just for Danny.) But... more

Unlike Emmett, Holland decided to immediately inspect the work done to them. When the compact mirror came out, he got instinctively nervous, but Holland seemed to like it. “Hey, not bad,” was a lot... more
