Holland Keene
The welcoming committee [Myffi]

There was another transfer. Into Emmett’s year, this time, but still. That was FIVE in the span of just over a year. So now there were as many fifth-and-sixth-year transfers as there were people in their group, and in the other group (Susan, Heather, Steven, Jacob, and Saad) and that was ridiculous. RMI had never had so many transfers, especially not into the same two years groups. It was suspicious.

First year, it had been Rose and Marissa in Aquila and Holland and Danny in Lyra. The numbers balanced nicely, and then Emmett had sort of rounded out the group by existing. Now Marissa was hell-bent on including Russell in things, Rose was most friendly with Ruben, Emmett had taken a shine (or something) to Kaye, and Holland liked Maverick on principle. Like Holland, Danny seemed to get along with all of them.

Holland certainly thought RMI was a special place, but it was hardly the only wizarding boarding school in the United States. There were a few specialty schools that focused on different cultural traditions of magic or different branches like the Sight, and there were other general schools like RMI. But the horde of same-aged transfers were here. It made Holland wonder if something was about to happen at RMI to warrant all the transfers. So they’d been trying to find out more. Maverick and Kaye had both left their last schools for disciplinary reasons as far as Holland could tell, Ruben’s family had moved from Europe, and Russell had decided to switch from homeschool to RMI for reasons that were currently unknown to Holland. Marissa might know; they’d have to ask. Also Kaye and Ruben both lived in the same part of Texas (how unlikely was that? It was the second biggest state!), so that was another connection.

In the meantime, Myfanwy (Holland had no idea how to pronounce her name but it had w’s and y’s so they were assuming it was Welsh) was now Holland’s hallmate, so Holland was doing a reconnaissance mission. Mostly to welcome her to Lyra and RMI, et cetera, but also for a little more information about their newest transfer.

It was cool how new rooms just appeared in the school as needed and none of the other dorms on the girls’ side were affected. The change had moved Rhiya and Holland’s rooms further apart, but Holland had checked and there weren’t any changes to the square footage of their room. Holland knew before this that the school must use a ridiculous amount of wizardspace, but this really highlighted how malleable RMI’s floorplan was. One day it had been a blank bit of wall and the next day there was a fully-furnished dorm.

Holland knocked on Myfanwy’s door. They were wearing dark blue men’s slacks and a white button-down with navy collar and cuffs, patterned with a navy grid. Today, their hair was pastel purple, with the roots their usual dark brown. Holland also had on full makeup, with mauve eyeshadow and silver eyeliner. Their favorite black and grey Oxfords and watch with the cream leather band completed the look. Holland was quite pleased with the outfit; it was as strategic as it was fashionable. Holland was meeting Myfanwy in the context of someone else who lived on the girls’ dorm, so they didn’t want to be too femme right now. It’d be easier to introduce their pronouns if their aesthetic wasn’t binary. And also Holland was feeling more masculine today anyway, so it all worked out well.

The door opened. Holland smiled a shimmery-lavender-lipstick smile. “Hi! I’m sure Mr. Tennant showed you around when you arrived, but I wanted to help welcome you to Lyra.” Someone with better etiquette would have baked cookies or brought a gift or something for Myfanwy, but Holland wasn’t that domestic and didn’t have money, so that was that. “I’m Holland Keene; I live next door. My pronouns are they/them. It’s nice to meet you.”

    • Is it a committee if it's just one person? - Myfanwy Owen, Fri Aug 11 10:44
Magic school seemed to have a lot of great surprises, and mostly Myfanwy still thought it was going to be amazing, but there were some parts of it that weren't actually so great. Like the biggest... more
      • We’re a small House - Holland, Fri Aug 11 19:31
Holland didn’t judge people by their outfits the way Heather Bartel did, but you could tell a lot about someone by how they dressed. For example, Danny’s tendency to wear neon was a huge indicator of ... more
        • But a Great one? - Myfanwy, Tue Aug 15 12:02
Holland came in and that made Myfanwy smile even more because it meant she had probably made a good first impression. Holland made an interesting first impression on her. She'd never met anyone like... more
          • Something like that - Holland, Thu Aug 17 16:25
Here was another weird thing about the transfers: they sort of corresponded with students who were already there. Russell was like Emmett but really weird. Ruben was like a male, Swedish version of... more
            • I'll find out soon enough - Myfanwy, Fri Aug 18 11:52
“Gosh that would be amazing,” Myfanwy beamed at Holland’s offer to help with her hair. People at her new school were just so nice. Everyone was offering to help her and they were just so chatty. It... more

Holland did know what Myffi meant, and also they already used products that weren't tested on animals. That was so great; Myfanwy was liking Holland more and more by the minute. This was proven the... more
                  • I think so - Holland, Wed Aug 23 12:59
Myffi had a more enthusiastic reaction to Holland mentioning the shop than they had ever gotten before. She seemed like an enthusiastic kind of person, though, so it probably shouldn’t have been a... more
