Oh, Myffi was vegan. The very serious kind of vegan who put in the work, not the kind who was doing it like a fad weight-loss diet. (Obviously you would lose weight if you stopped eating cheese. It was like gluten-free trenders, making restaurants less careful for people who actually had gluten sensitivity.) Holland didn’t regulate their diet for ethical reasons, but they wanted transparency about pesticides because who knew what the government put in there? Avoiding GMOs was silly, though, because everything edible was technically a genetically modified organism. Like, corn had been bred to have bigger kernels so it could be a useful food source. It was Mendelian, and using science to help that process along wasn’t a crime in Holland’s book.

Neither were animal-derived materials. Holland wore leather and silk but not fur, although that was less of a deliberate ethical choice and more because they didn’t care for the look and couldn’t afford it anyway. The Keenes owned a raccoon coat that had belonged to Monty’s grandfather in the 1920s, but it was just hanging in the hall closet. You couldn’t wear fur nowadays, and it was impractical anyway.

Myffi’s way of thinking sounded a little cult-y, if Holland was being honest. Was the commune a self-sustaining economy? What did the members do to afford the upkeep of the land and the supplies for the farm and animals? Did some of the members have day jobs? Holland very much wanted to know, but there wasn’t a good way to move the conversation back to that, so they left it for now.

“I know all the dyes I use are cruelty-free in production,” Holland said slowly, “and makeup too, like, I don’t own any products that were tested on animals.” That was something that mattered to Holland. That said, they knew some of their shimmery makeup products contained fish scales and there was definitely collagen and carmine in others, especially the Muggle ones. But they didn’t care that much about what went into the products. It was basically the same reason why they weren’t a vegetarian. There were problems with the meat industry, but ultimately Holland just liked to eat meat and humans got to enjoy some perks of being a globally dominant species. It might not be an especially humane way of thinking, but Holland wasn’t that rigidly green.

“I’d have to check on ingredients for the magical dyes, but the spells will be fine if that doesn’t work for you. Or we could try to make one. My mom owns a shop that sells homemade cosmetics and I help her a lot, so I have some maybe-useful experience.” Bryony had yet to really branch out bath products, despite Holland’s efforts. “We mostly make soap and bath bombs, but also some beauty products like nail polishes and non-toxic glitter and face masks. Mom buys most of her ingredients but she makes a point of using environmentally-responsible suppliers. I help with products sometimes, but I’m not really a potioneer; we do a lot of enchanting. Like, we have this citrus face mask with a mild Cheering Charm in it.” That was one of their best-selling products. Holland was workshopping a confidence-boosting version of the face mask, but they weren’t sure on what scent they wanted yet. Maybe eucalyptus or rose.

Holland furrowed their brow thoughtfully. “So does that mean you don’t make or use potions unless you know where all the components came from? What about things you can’t raise yourself, like powdered Erumpent horn?” Myffi was going to have a rough time in Potions class—assuming she was taking it—if that was the case.
