Introducing a new friend! [Darlene]
Sat Sep 16, 2017 09:11

It was a week after Midterm and Marissa had finally done what she promised and Kit was holding the results in her hand and it was amazing. He had such little legs and his butt was so furry and Kit was absolutely in love. She gently touched him and he skittered down her arm. Kit giggled.

Kit had initially wanted a cat, but then she’d learned how much work cats were and that sounded really hard. Then she’d wanted a frog (and Aaron had a lot of them so she thought she could just borrow one of his probably) but then she realized they were really jumpy and probably wouldn’t sit on her desk while she did homework even if it was for Aaron’s class and they really should have been paying attention in Aaron’s class because they were there all the time so they should know a lot more about magic then she did. And THEN Kit had wanted an owl, but she didn’t have many friends to write over the break because she saw Drew all the time, and she could borrow a school owl to send to her parents if she wanted to write (which she was really bad at remembering sometimes but really good at remembering other times) and it seemed silly to have an owl if you didn’t want to send letters. And dogs were more work than cats.

So she had ended up with Darby.

His little fangs moved back and forth and Kit giggled. She carefully tipped Darby back into the plastic container Marissa had brought him in, and looked around the room. Hm. That was a good idea!

With some effort, Kit pushed her bed and Darlene’s bed together, then sat down on it and tipped Darby out of his container again. The tarantula raised two of its front feet in the air and Kit giggled. It scuttled across the blankets to a gap between Darlene’s pillow and her blankets, then turned around inside the darker enclosure. Kit giggled again. Then she heard the door open.

“Darlene!” the first year squeaked. “Darlene we have a new friend!” Kit was so excited about Darby she was sure that Darlene would be too. Just like she had been about the disco ball that now hung from their ceiling, a Christmas gift from Dad. “Just be careful when you sit on your bed, he’s hiding under our pillow.” the redhead frowned, tucking a strand of hair that had escaped her braid behind one ear. “Or she. Darby might be a girl. It’s hard to tell.”
