Darlene Knight
"New friend" implies an old friend was here first
Fri Sep 22, 2017 19:24

Midterm was quiet. It was odd returning to the giant, echoing halls upon halls that housed only Darlene and her mother. Being at home made her feel quite small opposed to the towering decorations and architectures that adorned the grounds. She had in fact shouted once, just to hear it echo, while she was home. Then, quite satisfied, returned to her peaceful quiet.

But silence and normalcy and sanity were of course out the window now that she was back at Rocky Mountain International. The school itself wasn't entirely unhinged, of course. It was just her roommate. Kit Kendrick was… well, sometimes Darlene wondered if it might be easier to just have her explode and get all the energy build up over with. That girl was a whirlwind, and her fast-paced excitement was a far cry from the (happily) slow glide of formal pureblood society.

But ever the pureblood, Darlene saw Kit for her usefulness. Admittedly, sometimes she did like the other Lyra. Kit was probably more fun than Darlene had ever had. The problem was just that fun was uncomfortable and unusual and she didn't like fun. No, Kit’s real value was in her connections. It was relieving to see what staple - the “who you know” - still rang true here. Kit was connected to Drew, who was perhaps the nicest and cutest little gentleman Darlene had ever met. She liked him, and he was friends with (or somehow related to?) Kit, so that meant getting along with her was imperative.

Sometimes, though, there were days like this, where Kit made it exceptionally difficult to like her. Days where their beds were pushed into one (terrible) and… oh Merlin was she shrieking about a new friend? Darlene looked where Kit describes - from a distance, obviously - and could only see what seemed to be a couple of legs. Gross, furry, buglike legs.

Darlene took a deep breath. “Katherine,” she said with as much forced composure as she could manage, an abysmal attempt, “In the last five months or so, I have put up with a lot. The singing. The dinosaur costumes. The jumping on my be with me in it. The disco ball! But if ‘Darby’ is… what I think it is…” she swallowed, choking back preemptive tears. “I’m going to cry.”
