Do you come when I whistle?

As he sat, Danny realised Holland was doing homework, and maybe they didn't want to be disturbed as if they were trying to finish it before they went to bed. But then Holland commented on his date and Danny decided they wouldn’t have done that if they didn’t want conversation. “Yeah, it was good. I mean fine,” he grinned, settling back into the sofa. He had been trying to be far less, well, he guessed dramatic was actually a good word for it, about his thus far catastrophic romantic endeavours. He thought it was reasonable that he didn’t tell (most of) his friends about Rachel until after he knew there was something to tell, but they seemed to know, anyway. Danny had told Marissa, and he guessed that she’d told the others. He didn’t really mind, he just hadn’t been keen to advertise the details. So as Holland hadn’t really even asked about his date, he decided not to elaborate further.

He looked instead at the books Holland had moved, as a clue to their homework subject. “Arithmancy?” he took an educated guess. Not something he could help with, at any rate. He already took six subjects, which was an insane amount for someone who habitually tried to put in the least effort possible for maximum results, but arithmancy was not one of them. “Due in the morning or just really interesting?” he queried. Holland was already dressed in pyjamas so this was probably one of those ‘this needs to be done now’ things.

Danny personally didn’t work very well under pressure, so he tried to just do his assignments when they were set, unless they were ridiculously long-lasting like the animagus classes. Having worked on the requisite skills all of this and the previous term, Danny thought he was actually very close to being able to attempt the transformation. He was still going through phases of being too distracted to work - he was managing to fit in running and swimming most days now, as well as regular Quidditch practise - but he made up for it during phases of constant productivity. It probably wasn’t sustainable in the long term but it was working for him right now.

Even though this was one of the first things they had done in Arithmancy, Professor Wilson wanted everyone to show their work on their personal numbers. So Holland had calculated their character,... more

Danny got defensive, which meant that Holland was probably right on the mark but he didn’t want them to be. Well, all right. Holland supposed that if they were dating someone they were moderately... more
