*blinks innocently*

He could appreciate the desire to get ahead in homework, but still he didn’t tend to work this late himself, and usually favored his dormitory or the library if he was working on his own. Danny only ventured into the commons with a textbook when a group of them all had the same assignment to complete, in which case it could be helpful to share books and ideas. Even then he would be fully dressed; with the specific exceptions of the pancake party and Marissa’s sleepover party, he only ever wore his pyjamas for sleeping.

“So was it good or was it just fine?” Holland said, and Danny took a moment to realise they weren’t talking about Arithmancy any more. They’d even set the book aside and gotten more comfortable on the sofa; apparently Holland did want to talk about his date. He’d amended his original evaluation of his evening because he hadn’t wanted to sound too enthusiastic - because he was trying not to be dramatic, because he didn’t want to raise his own (or anyone else’s) hopes up (or down, for that matter), because he didn’t want to say one thing and have Rachel say another - ‘fine’ was an acceptable descriptor. Yet he couldn’t help grinning a bit when Holland suggested Rachel seemed happy.

“Yeah, we went bowling,” he nodded once in affirmation. “Then got some milkshakes, then - came back again.” He did not need to share every detail. “It was good,” he reverted to his earlier assessment. “We had fun.”

Holland’s phrasing was ambiguous but it sounded like they’d known about the plans in advance… which meant they’d have known Rachel and Danny would be coming back through the Lyra commons afterwards. It was reasonably unusual for Holland to be doing homework in the commons at curfew in Paisley pyjamas. Considering also that Holland had rerouted the conversation when Danny had already dropped it, he suddenly suspected this wasn’t a chance meeting. He grinned. “Holland, were you waiting up for us?” he teased.

Danny looked cocky and pleased with himself. Which, granted, wasn’t unusual for him, but since it was immediately after the date Holland could guess why. Technically this was the first time Danny had ... more

Holland seemed to mull over Danny’s input, which just made him feel bad for saying anything in the first place. Rose and Emmett weren't hurting anyone, probably - least of all each other, for the... more
