Until proven guilty

Danny laughed good naturedly at Holland. He didn't mind; in fact it was comforting to know that his friend still took an interest in his life, even after all his idiotic decisions. He thought they would both agree that Holland had really taken care of Danny over the past couple of terms, by hearing him out in all his ill-conceived plans and being there to pick up the pieces when they fell through. He wasn't sure how to say how grateful he was without it sounding either patronising or trite.

The conversation soon shifted. Perhaps his celebration of Holland taking an interest in his life had been premature; of course Holland would remember one of the main reasons Danny had cited for not dating Marissa back in September. He didn't mind that Holland was asking about it, he just didn't know what to tell them. He had already decided, back in midterm, when he'd been grounded and had lots of time to think about things, that he wasn't going to tell his friends about his conversation with his mother. Firstly because he was a bit embarrassed by committing to an ideal that had turned out to be more optional than he'd initially believed, but, probably more importantly, it seemed his friends struggled to understand his familial commitments - they would be far less likely to understand Danny’s intentions to continue with them, heedless of an option to do otherwise. This was the only future he'd ever considered for himself, and mostly it held appeal. However Danny felt that even Holland, who made a real effort to understand his perspective, might have difficulty comprehending his determination to stay on that track.

He followed Holland’s example and moved to sit more comfortably. His legs were too long now to cross completely on the sofa, but he pulled up the knee of the side closer to the cushions, and rested his boot on his leg, keeping his other foot on the floor. It enabled him to turn his body to face Holland more directly at the other end of the furniture. “Nothing changed, exactly,” he said, which was sort of true. “My perspective, I guess?” He sighed and ran a hand distractedly through his hair.

“I think you'll agree I've not been adept at this whole romance, relationships, whatever,” he gestured vaguely. “Some not-serious, low-drama, no-pressure dating just seemed like a … well maybe not a good idea,” he grinned again, “but not the worst.” He could think of many far worse ideas, which, off the top of his head, included Marissa hooking up with Ruben, and Rose dating Emmett. “Is that… does that make sense?”

  • You? Innocent? - Holland, Tue Sep 26 12:18
Caught out, Holland couldn’t help smiling and blushing a bit. “Maybe,” they offered with a shrug. It was more that they’d wanted to talk to Danny without Emmett, and since Emmett was usually in bed... more

“Agreed on all counts.” That they would have lost money betting against Rose and Emmett, that it was good for the couple if they really liked each other, and that Holland wouldn’t have imagined the... more
            • I don't believe so - Danny, Thu Sep 28 12:10
Dardanius sniggered when Holland mentioned their own dating habits. In their defense, that blind date party had a lot to answer for. He really didn't want to think about Ruben in any capacity -... more
              • The defense rests - Holland, Thu Sep 28 16:58
To Holland’s surprise, Danny picked up the thread of suspicion when Holland had been willing to drop it. That was a reversal. And his first move was to suggest Rose had instigated the relationship.... more
                • So can I whistle again now? - Danny, Fri Sep 29 10:51
Holland seemed to mull over Danny’s input, which just made him feel bad for saying anything in the first place. Rose and Emmett weren't hurting anyone, probably - least of all each other, for the... more
