Would you like a judge or a jury?

Holland was about to protest that something must have changed—if nothing had needed to change for him to be comfortable dating, then he would have done it before now—when Danny amended his statement. His perspective. What did that mean? It was a vague answer, although Holland would guess that what Danny meant was that he had changed his mind about whether marriage had to be the end goal of dating. It was unlikely he had rethought the prospect of giving up his birthright and the status symbols that came with it. Holland would be surprised if he ever did.

His self-deprecating comment made Holland grin. “‘Adept’ isn’t the word I would use, no,” they agreed. At RMI, Danny had only tried to do things with Marissa and Camilla, but neither situation had been handled adeptly. “But yes, it makes sense.”

Dating Marissa would be high-drama, high-pressure, high-stakes. Because of who they were, the fact that they really liked each other, and everyone else, in equal measures. If they had a messy breakup (and Holland frankly didn’t see how, after all this buildup, a breakup wouldn’t be messy) there’d be social consequences. Holland was of the opinion that they could figure out how to date, if they were both willing to put in work, but so far that hadn’t happened. Rachel was a bit of a wallflower, but that might be good for Danny. Hopefully Rachel knew that Danny wasn’t thinking of what they were doing as serious. The seventh-year was graduating in a few months, so presumably she wasn’t expecting anything lasting either. Holland hoped Danny had had the foresight to make sure they were on the same page. He wasn’t adept at relationship talks, but he was usually considerate.

Some (Marissa) might argue he could be overly considerate. That was Holland’s understanding of what had happened between their friends; Marissa was willing to try monogamy, but Danny’s misguided gallantry couldn’t allow her to do so in good conscience. Anything that broke that cycle, including dating Rachel, was probably a good idea.

Satisfied, Holland was willing to change the subject. “Okay, so, speaking of romance-relationship-whatever,” Holland began. They scanned the Common Room. Roger had been lounging on the giant beanbag chair just before Rachel had arrived, but he must have left since then; Holland couldn’t see his giant newspaper or hear him humming anymore. Great. “Emmett and Rose are still a thing and they adopted a puffskein together. Am I the only one who thinks this is super weird?” It had been going on for months and no one had fully discussed how incomprehensible it was with Holland.

Danny laughed good naturedly at Holland. He didn't mind; in fact it was comforting to know that his friend still took an interest in his life, even after all his idiotic decisions. He thought they... more
