Holland accepted the shift in focus, albeit with some apparent surprise. Danny gently exhaled while he waited for his friend to respond to the question, which they did, although the answer did not leave much room for discussion. He nodded a couple of times to express acknowledgment that Holland’s options were limited. In fairness it was, as Holland said, a small school, and they had already dated or otherwise been involved with a couple of its students.

Danny had not really appreciated before that it might be harder for Holland to date than for some of the other students. Marissa probably had the best chance, simply because she didn't seem to have preference by gender, and would probably be considered attractive to anyone who was interested in girls (Danny knew, technically, that people were supposed to have types or whatever, but he honestly couldn't imagine a person finding Marissa unattractive). Her dating record reflected this probability, Danny realised, with no small amount of disinterest. Whereas Holland, on the other hand, had only been interested in guys, as far as Danny knew; the number of guys who would be interested in Holland was, he would concede, statistically not likely to be huge, especially in a school the size of RMI, despite the fact that Holland was amazing. Even when he'd just come back from a date - so had dressed with some effort - and Holland was wearing pyjamas, Danny suspected he was not currently the most attractive person in the room.

As for himself, Danny thought he ought to maybe whine a little less about dating to Holland. Yes, he had his own specific hangups, and clearly he was clueless about most aspects of romantic relationships, but if Holland wasn't complaining then Danny should really try harder to smile and get on with it… whatever ‘it’ was. “Empty venn,” Danny repeated. “Got it.” He elected not to ask about the field that held in it people Holland would be interested in dating. He tried not to imagine who he might place in his own field of interest, considering his own overlapping section definitely already held the names of at least two people, one of whom he was currently dating. That was just at school.

“Well at least that saves a person from making na mess of everything,” he said with a sigh and a wry smile that didn't hide his earlier cheer, which had by now returned to him. Danny put both his feet back on the floor and stretched his arms up, stifling a yawn. “I'm heading up for some sleep. Up again in a few hours for swimming, running, Quidditch,” he grinned. “You coming?” They'd need to separate at the staircase so Holland could access their room on the girls’ side of the corridor, but it felt polite not to leave Holland in the commons on their own.

Danny got defensive, which meant that Holland was probably right on the mark but he didn’t want them to be. Well, all right. Holland supposed that if they were dating someone they were moderately... more
