Holland Keene
You’ve got to be kidding me [Danny]
Mon Dec 11, 2017 16:23

The rest of the beach party was fine. After the volleyball game, Holland had some of the snacks Marissa and the house elves had provided (turkey burger with grilled pineapple and sweet potato fries) and spent some time hanging out with Zoey Ludlow, who they didn’t know very well but who was fun to talk to. Zoey was always willing to share her thoughts about how magic worked and it’s origins, and they were interesting theories even if they were too religious for Holland to put much stock in.

To their credit, Holland had not approached Danny or Emmett during the rest of the party. This felt like a point to their credit because they were pretty close to sure that if they had talked to either of their best friends they would have snapped at them. After the party, they still wanted to snap at Danny, but they went back to their dorm instead. That could wait until most of the student body—especially Heather Bartel—wasn’t right there.

When they got back to the Lyra Common Room, Holland changed into their pajamas, a loose-fitting violet t-shirt and grey shorts with a floral pattern. They spent a few minutes getting the sand out of their bleached-blonde hair and out from underneath their navy-painted fingernails. It seemed extremely dramatic to lie in wait for Danny to get back from whatever post-party thing he and Marissa were probably off doing, but Holland picked a book (They’re Trying to Overwhelm You: An Analysis of Media Tactics Under Authoritarian Regimes) and a seat in the Common Room and sat there reading for a while.

Upon seeing Danny return, Holland shut their book, stood, and approached him. “Hey, come here,” they said. Holland took Danny by the wrist without waiting for a response and, heedless of any protests, led him to the nearest place that had any privacy, which was one of the soundproofed practice rooms. Holland preemptively appreciated the soundproofing charm; this probably wasn’t a conversation Holland wanted all of Lyra House privy to, which is why they had decided against talking to him in the boys’ dormitory.

They shut the practice room door behind them and then turned to face Danny. “I am getting really sick of you and Emmett playing chaperone,” Holland snapped. “It is none of your business if I want to talk to Ruben.”

    • Not kidding around - Dardanius, Mon Dec 11 16:58
Overall the beach party had been a success, both for its hostesses and for Dardanius. The weirder, less enjoyable parts had been suitably compensated, and indeed almost wiped from memory, when he’d... more
      • You expect me to believe that? - Holland, Mon Dec 11 20:42
Danny denied doing anything on purpose, so point to Emmett, who had at least admitted it when he was interfering. Holland scoffed. “Emmett did the same thing at Marissa’s last party, only he sent... more
        • How about now? - Danny, Tue Dec 12 03:36
Holland seemed really mad for something as predictable as Danny not wanting them to get cosy with Ruben. It was throwing him into a state of mild confusion, which was undoubtedly exacerbated by the... more
          • I believe that you’re overreacting - Holland, Tue Dec 12 12:01
Danny started with, “ Ruben doesn’t, ” and Holland scoffed in return. The fact that only the guys reacted defensively like that to Ruben made them sure that that was what was going on, even if Danny... more
            • Likewise - Danny, Tue Dec 12 15:55
Holland professed to not being an idiot, and Danny thought he did well to merely frown in response. Then his friend altered the direction of the argument - they were definitely arguing; this was... more

At least Danny wasn’t practically shouting at them anymore. The two hadn’t argued before—not like this—but it didn’t surprise Holland that Danny got loud when he was angry. He was shirtless again,... more
                • What’s your point? - Danny, Wed Dec 13 03:59
He hadn’t meant to say that last bit out loud; he had just been trying to come up with anything coherent, and that had been what his mind and mouth had provided. It was true, but it obviously just... more

Are you kidding me, Holland thought, with an extra modifier in the middle of the sentence. They couldn’t believe Danny was dragging Marissa into this—that he was insecure because she’d slept with... more

“Ruben knows things about me that you don’t because he needed to.” What? Needed to? What did that - oh. No, that’s not what Danny meant. It, well, it might have been a part of it, but that wasn’t -... more

Danny looked agitated now. He was pacing and messing with his hair and avoiding eye contact and not finishing sentences. The mood in the practice room had gotten tenser in the span of a few seconds.... more

It sound like Holland was going to argue that’s not what they had wanted, but then they stopped themselves. Danny was exhausted. He felt raw and restless and he just wanted to go back to his... more
                          • First we need a map - Holland, Thu Dec 14 12:27
“ It doesn’t matter, ” Danny agreed. Holland exhaled, unnoticed tension leaving their shoulders. They’d known that. They knew Danny; it had never felt like that mattered, not since first year before... more
