Not kidding around

Overall the beach party had been a success, both for its hostesses and for Dardanius. The weirder, less enjoyable parts had been suitably compensated, and indeed almost wiped from memory, when he’d caught up with Marissa later. They’d made good use of the not-so-secret space behind the waterfall, and taken advantage of their attire, selected for the beach day theme but not without its other benefits.

Danny had stayed until the end of the party to help tidy up as usual, but on this occasion he had left before all the work was done; the poltergeist with a soft spot for Aquilas seemed to be content in collecting together the various pineapple themed paraphernalia, and Danny had no intention of messing with Rose’s incredible wandwork. So when the discarded packets, empty cups and other assorted garbage had been cleared away, Marissa kissed him goodbye and sent him back to Lyra.

It was a more dishevelled sixth year that returned to the commons, with his pineapple swim shorts damp in the pockets from a haphazardly cast drying charm, his yellow t-shirt slung around his neck and over both shoulders, and his too-long-to-be-neat brown hair decided less neat than usual, and still damp at its tips. Fully intending on taking his second shower of the day before settling into his dormitory for the night with his DADA reading, Danny was surprised when Holland apprehended him. He was a great deal more than surprised when they dragged him into one of the practise rooms. Shocked, even; bewildered, definitely. This was not behaviour he would usually associate with Holland (Marissa had definitely dragged him into rooms before now, and he certainly wouldn’t put it past Rose, but Holland usually used words to make a point, not whatever was happening here). They looked mad. They also looked about a thousand times better than he did, and while Danny wouldn’t have chosen cute floral shorts for his own person, he did lament that he hadn’t had chance to take that shower before Holland accosted him.

All evidence to the contrary, on a given day, Dardanius wasn’t a complete idiot, and he didn’t think Holland was, either, so he suspected what this ambush might be about. He wasn’t wrong; not entirely, anyway. He wasn’t sure what Emmett had to do with it, but was content to share the blame with him. He also wasn’t sure why Holland sounded quite so pissed. Or why they had soundproofed the room. “Hey you can talk to Ruben all you like,” he said, his tone with a hint of defensiveness that by no way overwhelmed the general antagonism that was a reflection of Holland’s own approach. “Nobody’s stopping you talking.” It was the touching that bothered him. It had probably been bothering Kaye, too, which was definitely relevant.

“Look,” he said, dropping his voice back to a more normal register, and friendlier sound. “Kaye said we should play volleyball and you guys were already playing, I’m not chaperoning you.”
