Oh. Whoops.

He had no idea what to expect when those words had left his mouth. Danny almost wished he could take them back, but the truth remained it was absolutely impossible he would be able to keep something like that to himself. Of all the people he could tell, surely Holland was the right candidate? Admittedly it could be argued that Holland was the absolute worst person to tell, considering how this revelation had the potential to inflict unpredictable and lasting damage on their friendship, but Danny suspected that otherwise he would only be acting peculiarly around Holland. With a disposition to instinctively mistrust everything, Holland would have found him out soon, anyway. At least this way Danny was delivering the news when it was fresh, not waiting until it had time to fester.

He also seemed to have solved the conundrum of their cyclical argument. Admittedly the atmosphere was a lot weirder now, but he was pretty sure they weren’t arguing anymore right now. In fact, Holland wasn’t saying anything at all. Danny didn’t really blame them; what did a person say to something like that? What sort of person said something like that, anyway, to their friend, when they were dating someone else? The little voice that chirped in Danny’s head to ask him what he was doing seemed to have taken flight in defeat.

Danny let the silence stretch out. Partly because it was only fair to give Holland chance to process, and partly because Danny couldn’t think of a single thing to say. He remained motionless, wordless, listening to the rhythmic evidence that both of them were still alive, until finally Holland made a sound.

They sounded freaked out. That was fair. Danny strongly suspected he was going to freak out later, once he had time to himself to overthink all this. Right now, he was still amazed by how little agitation he felt, especially compared to minutes earlier. Perhaps he really was just tired after a long day and difficult discussion, or perhaps he was keeping it together because it was essential that one of them remained collected, and Danny could do that for Holland … especially when he’d been the one to instigate this newest wave of travesty.

“Then nothing,” he replied. He sat down on the ground right where he was. Finding something coherent to say next was going to take all his remaining energy; Danny didn’t need to waste any by standing around unnecessarily. “Sorry I - probably shouldn’t have said that,” he looked up at Holland, and wondered if they’d join him on the floor or if they’d prefer to maintain some distance. “I just figured out why all this,” he gestured his hand widely over his head, circling to indicate the room they’d been shut inside for too long, “is happening.” He looked at his knees rather than back at Holland anymore, concerned they wouldn’t like the expression they found there. “We know I’m slow about this stuff.” Or they knew he had trouble dating girls, anyway. This particular branch of stuff was all new territory. At least he had worked it out more or less on his own this time.

Danny exhaled some more. He was starting to feel the weight of this newly-identified burden. What if Holland found it uncomfortable to be around him now? What if his sudden outburst had ruined their friendship more swiftly and effectively than anything Ruben could possibly achieve? What about Marissa: Should he tell her? Should he hide it from her? This was a mess. “Then nothing,” Danny repeated, to his knees. “I’m crazy about Marissa, you and I are friends, and at least I know why I hate the thought of you with Ruben. Or anyone,” he added more honestly, with a shrug, trying to shake off the sensation of being overwhelmed that was starting to snake its way across his chest. He didn’t know what Emmett’s angle was, but it was probably more honorable than Danny’s; there were reasons Emmett was the best friend.
