Do you know any?

Holland didn’t sit with Danny, but they did move towards the door. For a stomach-lurching second, Danny thought they were just going to leave. He suspected both of them had considered vacating the room and quitting the argument they’d been having at some stage or other, but to leave now would surely cause more problems than it solved. Not knowing what he would have done, or how he might have attempt to persuade them to stay, Danny was relieved that Holland didn’t leave, yet - although moving towards the door was a strong indication of intention.

The repeated assertion that they were friends was important; Danny was pleased that Holland had said it. It gave him the confidence to look up again, protected by the knowledge that whatever damage he had caused to their friendship, at least one still existed between them. “And you… just… hate the thought of me dating.” Danny grimaced. He had said that - it wasn’t the complete and entire truth but it certainly held enough elements that he wasn’t going to pedantically argue against words he had essentially spoken.

“Maybe… maybe it’ll be okay now. Now I - I mean, I get why it was bothering me.” Also Holland had said they didn’t plan on dating Ruben again. So it probably wouldn’t be an issue, anyway. Surprisingly that made Danny feel worse, in the moment - was he really so selfish that he didn’t want a friend to date in case it made him uncomfortable? He liked to think he wasn’t intentionally so self-centered, but he was possessive: that was something he’d gradually realized about himself, and it wasn’t restricted to relationships; Dardanius was fiercely protective of his friends, too. He suspected that might have been one of many contributing factors in his failing to realise precisely why Ruben and Holland together had caused him any degree of emotional anguish.

“Maybe we should call it a night,” Holland suggested. On one hand, Danny couldn’t agree more: if Holland was feeling even half as drained as Dardanius, their desire to escape was well founded. His DADA reading wasn’t getting done tonight, that was for sure. On the other hand, ceasing the conversation now would only lead to both of them, probably - Dardanius definitely - lying awake, alone, and overthinking every possible aspect of what had been an especially weird day. That didn’t sound any more relaxing than being here, in this quiet room, with just the two of them. If Holland had questions, Danny was here to answer them - or well, he could try, but he couldn’t pretend to be in possession of many answers himself. He was preoccupied with knowing they had to get through tomorrow, and Quidditch practise, and classes after that, and Danny knew he couldn’t behave normally around Holland if they just left things here. Holland had already affirmed their friendship, but Danny needed specific clarification that he wouldn’t be held responsible for destroying possibly the most influential friendship of his life.

“Maybe,” Danny offered a non-committal reply to hand the decision back over to Holland; their hand was already on the door handle, so he guessed that choice had been made. He wasn’t going to make them stay, if they wanted to leave now. He wasn’t sure that, between them, they could make the situation any better - perhaps it was best they were saved from making it any worse. Nevertheless, there was still one question that it was imperative for Holland to answer before they left.

“Holland?” Danny caught the vulnerability in his own voice and sought to correct it. “I am sorry. For interfering.” Better, but not perfect. Now for the finale. “Are we okay?”
