I live in Union and my father worked for Southern Railway. I think it was early 70's, I remember local flooding that occurred here. A crew was on the way to work Lockhart mill & encountered a washout just as they got into Lockhart. The engine derailed and some of the crew safely jumped from the engine. I don't remember his name but was of the crew was pinned across his midsection by the front handrail. In those days there were no "jaws of life" tools to assist. They did manage to somehow pry the rail away and free the crew member but upon the release, he passed out and never recovered from his injuries. I think he passed away before they reached the hospital.
