John Andrew HutchisonRe: Re Donald McGregorSat Mar 3, 2012 06:562.26.40.54Hi Elizabeth,
Ronald's son Donald was an innkeeper in Balquhidder, but I have the impression his father's links to distillery were more informal. I think it was a common hobby at the time to illegally distil spirits. The reports on the annexed estates, (1755-56), say; "There are two or three people in this barony who buy beer in the low country, carry it home, malt it, and distil it into aqua vitae, particularity Ronald Drummond in Kirktown and James Stewart in Cuilt, both keep public houses." But the same document also refers to him as a landowner, as does the 1815 document Stewarts of the South, that says he owned the farm Tomnasai, which I think is the same as the old farm of Tom na Croich.
If it helps, I think your Cath Cameron is the Catharine Cameron in the IGI as the daughter of Alexander Cameron and Helen Morison, christened 8 Sep 1771 in Balquhidder.
John.
