It's ironic, because you are the source that many of would turn to for fire department histories. It's hit and miss, but newspapers can be a good resource. While working on my book about firefighter deaths, I came across several articles about fires that say something like, "one of our brave firemen were killed" but without details about what happened, his name, etc. Yet at times there is a wealth of details, quite graphically about the fire, fire department and firefighters. At the least, you might be able to track down the earliest mention of a formal - or informal, for that matter - fire depattment, even if it is not truly its "foundation." If the newspapers are digital, don't limit the search term to include the word "department." Finding when a fire "engine" "pump" "machine" "apparatus" was first aquired would be suggestive of initial organized firefighing. If local libraries don't have digitized resources, try www.newspapers.com

Hi Valerie Unfortunately, there is no "secret source." When you've exhausted your obvious local sources, you might need to broaden your search. I don't know anything about Louisville, GA. Surely... more
