with the tactical approach best suited to guiding us to progress within this tournament. The defensively disciplined, organised, rigid 442 formation he's introduced is for me the way forward in a competition where we have little or no expectations to do well.

Redknapp's style of football would have left us exposed at the back, whereas Hodgson recognises that the defence (which has always been a strength for England anyway) has to be the platform to build on against technically superior sides (one of which we face next in the quarters) with France being a good example.

IMO it's this approach which has led us to surpass all expectations, as well as the lack of comparable media hysteria befote/during previous major tournaments. Although it must be said that expectation will probably now rise.

          • Interesting though that I read a lot, a couple of years back about us not going anywhere with 4-4-2 and how it was the wrong approach.

I think we've finally (or perhaps just for this tournament because of the lack of expectation/Hodgson's late arrival) realised that beating teams such as Germany and Spain at their own game just... more
