Looking ahead to League fixtures released 21st June 2018
Mon Apr 30, 2018 13:04

With Wanderers’ promotion to ‘League One’ confirmed with a week still to play of the 2017/18 season, minds will start turning to the fixture list for the 2018/19 campaign. The Football League have announced that the fixtures will be released on Thursday 21st June 2018 from 9am.

The fixtures will include a first ever meeting between Wycombe Wanderers and Sunderland. The former Premier League side have suffered successive relegations to play in the third tier for the first time since the 1987/88 season (their only previous season playing at that level).

Going into the final day of the ‘Championship’ season (Sunday 6th May 2018), the two remaining relegation slots had yet to be decided. Bolton Wanderers and Burton Albion went into the final day in the drop zone places but victories in their final games (Bolton home to Nottingham Forest and Burton at Preston), could force Barnsley (away to Derby County) and Birmingham (home to Fulham) to start looking over their shoulders.

If Bolton Wanderers suffer relegation they will also play Wycombe for the first time in their long history. They last played in the third tier as recent as the 2016/17 season but returned after just one season. Between 1983/84 and 1991/92 they spent ten seasons in the bottom two divisions of the Football League – including the 1987/88 season in the then 4th Division.
