Gareth Ainsworth

“It’s a real kick in the teeth the way we lost but we’ve got to defend better as a team because we limited them to shots from distance.”

“You can’t let that sort of goal happen. It is really disappointing. We are absolutely gutted and my dressing room is devastated and theirs is probably elated.

“The guy has travelled the best part of 70 yards with the ball, put the cross in under little pressure and the header is not really challenged. We’ve lost because of one crazy period of defending. You can’t switch off.”

“We’ve got to do better up front as well because we didn’t trouble their keeper once today.”

Commenting on Wycombe best chance of the game when goalkeeper Ryan Allsop blazed over from six yards in the 5th minute of stoppage time, he said;

“It would have been fantastic at the end if Ryan had scored."

On the financial gap between the two sides.

“[Coventry City have] got a £300,000 signing from the summer [Amadou Bakayoko] that can’t even get into their side so that shows where they are.

“Coventry are a good quality of team. I know they were in the same league as us last year."

“But they should never be in that league and they are a good side. I think Coventry will be up there. They will be challenging, will be in the top half.

“Spending that kind of money is a luxury. It’s unbelievable. The gulf between the two clubs is huge. There is no youth team or academy at Wycombe and we are up against it. But we punch above our weight.”

Ainsworth didn’t mention City’s goal scorer Conor Chaplin, who will cost the club £500,000 when his loan deal from Portsmouth is upgraded to a permanent contract in January 2019.

“We weren’t at our best but we frustrated Coventry. One moment has cost us where the smallest player scores the header. A 0-0 would have been a decent result.”

“We weren’t great, and if you can’t win then don’t lose, but it comes back to that moment. Our boys are gutted and knackered. There were positives but some negatives too. Their right-back travelled 70 yards under little pressure to put in the cross for the winner.”
