Longest winless runs for Wanderers in the Football League
Mon Apr 1, 2019 09:02

Wanderers defeat at Oxford on Saturday 30th March 2019 extended the winless run for Gareth Ainsworth's side to ten games.

It's the first time since October 2009 that Wanderers have gone ten games in the League without a win.

That run was extended to ten when Wycombe lost 3-2 at home to Walsall on 31st October 2009. There was no let-off the next game either as Wanderers suffered a 6-0 defeat away to Huddersfield Town. The no-win run was broken the following game with a surprise 2-0 victory at Millwall on 21st November 2009.

The longest winless runs for Wanderers in the Football League is 13 games. This has happened on three occasions and twice in the same season.

The first time was during the early stages of the 2003/04 season when having beaten Stockport County 1-0 on the opening day of the season, the next game saw a 3-2 defeat at Blackpool and the winless run continued through to a 2-1 home defeat to Barnsley on 18th October 2003 (13 games). The run was ended the following game with a 3-0 victory over Bristol City on 21st October 2003 under caretaker boss John Gorman.

Remarkably, a run of the same length run was recorded in the second half of the 2003/4 season. After beating Bournemouth on 20th December 2003, there was miserable 4-0 defeat at Brighton on Boxing Day 2003. Wanderers next victory in the League came 14 games later on 27th March 2004 with a 3-2 victory at Oldham Athletic - Nathan Tyson scored twice that day for Wycombe under Manager Tony Adams. Wanderers were relegated two weeks later.

There was one other occasion to date where Wanderers have gone 13 games witout a win in the Football League - but this straddled two seasons, all under Paul Lambert. A run from losing 3-0 at Torquay United on 10th March 2007 until 11th August 2007, when Wycombe drew 2-2 away to Dagenham & Redbridge (two games into the 2006/07 season), combined to create another run of 13 League games with a win for Wanderers. That run was ended with a 1-0 home victory over Bury on 25th August 2007 - Sergio Torres grabbing a very welcome winner. That season ended with Wycombe losing out in the League Two play-offs.
