Carlson piloting. After 20 minute running battle, plane gradually lost altitude and ditched in Solomon Sea between Rabaul and Kiriwina Island. Pilot and co-pilot pinned in cockpit and drowned. 8 crewmen rescued by PBY Catalina, several with injuries.
