John, I have no photo of this plane, note spelling, and cannot find one where I have looked. You may have all of the information about it, but just in case not, I will relate below what is known of this plane of the 403rd Sqd.
B-24D-155 42-72800 SHEWANSTA 10/43 to 10/25/43 Remarks: Arrived in theater 8/27/43. Engines damaged by Japanese Navy Zero fighters just after bombing Lakunai Airdrome, Rabaul, with 2/Lt. John W. Carlson piloting. After 20 minute running battle, plane gradually lost altitude and ditched in Solomon Sea between Rabaul and Kiriwina Island. Pilot and co-pilot pinned in cockpit and drowned. 8 crewmen rescued by PBY Catalina, several with injuries.
Just wondering if anyone out there has a photo of a 43rd B24 nicknamed "Shawantsta"? If so, a copy would be very much appreciated! Regards, John Barone, Associate Life Member.
