Question about Potawatomi Peltiers
Fri Aug 12, 2016 10:27

We are honoring John “Rocky” Barrett, tribal chairman of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, Shawnee, Ok., at the Trail of Courage Living History Festival Sept. 17-18, 2016, at Rochester IN. He will be given a Key to the City by our Mayor.
I am the Fulton County Historian and I always write a family history of the honored Potawatomi family. Each year we honor a different Potawatomi family that had ancestors on the Trail of Death forced removal from Indiana to Kansas in 1838, or signed treaties in Indiana. This brief history is published our local newspaper, Rochester Sentinel.

In my research I found that Nicholas Peltier was the first Peltier to come to America. But I have not been able to connect him with Rocky’s ancestor, Alexander Peltier, born in Michigan in 1811. His wife was Josephine Osy-sin-ga Bennett. Their first child was born in Kansas in 1849 so it is possible they went west on the Trail of Death.

Another Peltier descendant, Susan Campbell, has been sharing her research with me. She might have contacted you several years ago.

Have you any information that might make the connections I am looking for?

Thank you. I greatly appreciate your help.

Shirley, I'm sorry I have no information for you. My line is descended from Guillaume Pelletier and is documented from France to Quebec in 1641 and most migrated to the east Coast of New England.
