Tehran, Aug 26, IRNA – Head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization Ali Akbar Salehi announced the country’s proposal to Russia to establish a nuclear fuel consortium to supply fuel to Bushehr plant and the others to be set up in future.

In a televised interview on the occasion of Government Week (August 24-30), he added, “Based on the proposal, some sections of the work will be conducted in Russia and some in Iran.”

Russia is currently studying the proposal, he noted.

On the need to continue enrichment in Iran, Salehi said, “We should demonstrate our potential and actual capabilities in the field of producing uranium and transforming it into plates.

“We do not intend to produce the fuel of all plants inside Iran,” he went on to say.

As to the supply of fuel for Tehran research reactor, he also said, “We have so far enriched 25 kilograms of 20 percent enriched uranium.”

Turning to Bushehr plant, Salehi hoped that fuel injection to the heart of reactor would begin late September and the reactor would be closed late October.

Bushehr power plant was loaded with fuel on August 21.

Describing safety, safeguard and technical assistance to the IAEA’s member states as the three main principles, he said that the agency has not paid balanced attention to them and it has dealt with safeguard more than the other areas.

Safety of the plants is an international issue and the agency should facilitate using the experience of other countries in the field rather than obstructing it, he said, complaining about the restrictions on utilizing the agency’s technical helps.

The West accuses Iran of developing nuclear weapons secretly but Tehran denies saying that it has no such an intention and its peaceful nuclear program is aimed at generating electricity.
