At the feast of 1881 the games of chance are nearly all conducted within the inner court of the main building. Many of the professional gamblers running the numerous gambling booths and venues came from Prescott; and other Arizona towns. Strictly in the sense of gambling savvy and acumen, the Prescott paper was noted for advancing itself and badmouthing Tombstone as being inferior in that regard. For your amusement I have extracted from the Arizona Weekly Star - 9/1/1881 all the pertinent players as advertised for the Feast:
“The celebrated keno game of D.S. Glascott…faro game of March & Berry… three games of faro, roulette and monte, owned by Mr. E.B. Gifford….game of “chusetts” conducted by Mr. Haines….roulette game of Mr. H.B. Smith…. the well-known faro game of McCleary & Co., Mr. McCleary being senior proprietor of the Shakespeare club rooms. In his place is the new Diana game, conducted by McCleary’s partner, Mr. Earnest Martel….. “High Ball” is conducted by J.G. Storks….Searle & Mail run their roulette table…. the faro and monte games of Mr. Matt Redding…… Other faro and monte games are conducted by Col. J.N. Brown, and by Mr. Billy Boone, and Mr. Robert Plumridge. Mr. B.C. Parker is also interested in a number of banking games…..Billy Bell, of Phenix, has several games in full blast. One of them is monte, (in company with Mr. Pedro Batillo) and rondo, pacine cane, red, white and blue, Chinaman, and rooster, and mustang.”
Let‘s don‘t for a minute think the “Earp gang“ is going to come in and push all these people around who mostly come every year and are established. They won’t stand for it and incumbent Chief of Police A.G. Buttner (with Johnson helping) had a handle on it in their behalf. As I said before, all the trouble happening at the Feast got into the newspapers. I have it all. Do you believe me? I have it. Its in a huge compilation file for “Big Ed” Byrnes and his top & bottom gang. If you force me I will open it up and extract the reported troubles which mostly came from that gang. At the feast those fellows were not allowed to set up shop(s) inside the main hall with the regulars. Trust me on this. yet they still managed to blow one safe nearby while everyone was distracted, and other bullies beat up on some people. They all got arrested - names in the paper - but no Earps mentioned.
