Back in Doc's days, there was no smoothe muscle relaxer specific medications dedicated to controlling the respiratory spasms associated with TB.
However alcohol and morphine, both used as depressants, would have helped relieve the respiratory spasms.
In effect, Doc would have had increased oxygen intake and thus, able to more normally function with increased O2 flow to his brain.
Doc must have been aware on some cognitive level of the above?
This is also why I have never agreed that Doc was necessarily an alcoholic? Alcohol was at least subconsciously being used as medicine.
