Death Valley Scotty

First, thanks to Ken for bringing this up. This has been a vexing question for years. I believe Boyer was the first writer to claim Earp was arrested with Death Valley Scotty, and others obligingly fell in line to repeat the claim.

I have never been able to figure it out one way or the other. I think now we have the answer, mostly because of the evidence that Ken provided.

When I read Ken’s posting below, I was struck that Scotty’s exploits had been recorded in different areas. So I did a newspapers dot com search for Death Valley Scotty in 1911, and the results are striking. Scotty’s movements are quite well documented throughout the year. Perhaps the paper that follows him most closely is the Los Angeles Times, even running an article about him nine days before the Earp arrest.

As I see it, it is unthinkable that if the Walter Scott arrested with Earp was, indeed, Death Valley Scotty that the LA Times and EVERY OTHER Los Angeles paper would have missed it.

I think it is clear that Death Valley Scotty was NOT arrest with Earp.
