It’s difficult to say exactly what Matthews meant by “overalls”. Levi Strauss didn’t start mass production of what we now know as “overalls” till the 1890s. It’s not until 1911 that Harry David Lee made the first bib front overalls. As I understand it, early overalls while usually made of denim, could also be made of corduroy or chino cloth. Since Frank McLaury was wearing “buckskin pants” over his overalls, it’s not clear if Cuddy could see any of the overalls being worn underneath. I suspect what Matthews called “buckskin pants” were most probably buckskin shotgun chaps (rather than a second layer of trousers) worn by Frank McLaury.

My Best,

Jeff Morey

Frank's overalls probably explains why Cuddy referred to the cowboys as "farmers" when he encountered them in the lot.

Thanks, Jeff. I was having a little hard time of it trying to imagine Frank with a holster strapped around bib overalls.
