One of the best things about reading “History “.

Bob,

One of the best things about reading “History” is finding out how frequently we superimpose the present onto the past by way of our imagination. We simply assume that by “overalls” Matthews meant exactly what we would be referring to when using the same word today. As I understand it, Travis wore “homespun jeans” at the Alamo. But, I have no idea what an 1836 pair of “homespun jeans” would be made of or look like. We all know what a Bowie Knife looks like. But, no one knows for sure what Jim Bowie’s knife looked like. I think that if we could travel back into the past, we would be absolutely flabbergasted by how very different the past was compared to the way we’ve imagined it.

My Best,

Jeff Morey

Thanks, Jeff. I was having a little hard time of it trying to imagine Frank with a holster strapped around bib overalls.
