5.0 earthquake shakes the area

The National Weather Service and Coast Guard confirmed a 5.0 earthquake occurred about 110 miles southeast of Key West at 3:58 p.m. today.

There were no immediate injuries or damage reported and there is no tsunami threat, according to National Tsunami Warning Center, said National Weather Service meteorologist Mike Rapsik.

The Navy and Coast Guard reported they were not taking any action out of the ordinary as of 4:40 p.m.

There were reports of tremors from the Freeman Justice Center in Key West, at Boca Chica Field and at Monroe County Sheriff's Office headquarters on Stock Island.

"I'm from Washington state so I've felt that before," said Deputy Becky Herrin, spokeswoman for the Sheriff's Office. "The building swayed is what I felt and many people in our building felt. We started getting phone calls from people asking, 'What was that?'"
