Did the folks at MSHSAA ever rethink the rule that you have to play a second solo if your Grade A solo is under 3 minutes? A 2 minute & 15 second to 2 minute & 45 second Grade A solo should stand on its own. With so many Grade A solos listed that are under 3 minutes in length, is there really a need for this rule? If a solo is of a level to be certified Grade A, and it's 2 minutes and 15 seconds or more, then let the young person just perform that piece. Let's stop making complications where there doesn't need to be amy.

I could not agree more. If the literature is well quality and written to be an 'A' level solo, then a quality judge should be able to evaluate a performer based on the time they took to play it.

though I agree there could be some changes in that rule. There are solos that are the same, Bozza's Aria comes to mind, that are listed as under three for alto but not clarinet. It's the same solo.

All performers must play a piece at an appropriate tempo for individual mastery. There are countless works, solo to large ensemble, that are performed at a level under the composer's tempo marking....

This time I have to agree with Terry, although not necessarily for all of the same reasons. The three minute rule has always seemed not to have a lot of legitimacy to me. Another one that I really...

Why don't you get a music ed degree and change the rule.

You should look into getting a GED (General Education on Decency) and see the "Wizard" about some courage while you're at it, coward. Obviously those with "music ed." degrees are not using them to...
