I have to admit, the girl has a will to learn. Mery thought, while watching the play of emotions that swept briefly over Kaimon’s face. The glow of saidar had sprung up around her, for just a moment, but it had been there. That was more than she could say for most attempting to embrace the One Power for the first time. Still, Mery had never been the sort of person to give out compliments needlessly, and this was not the time for it. So instead of gracing Kaimon with the flowery praise she might have had from another teacher, Mery only nodded in satisfaction.

“It is the first step on your path to become Aes Sedai, child, albeit a small one.” Strangely, Kaimon smiled – or almost smiled. Still, the it was obvious that she took what Mery had said as a compliment. “As I said before, it will become easier with each attempt. Try again.”

Two hours later, Kaimon had managed to hold on to saidar for more than an instant, and Mery decided it was time to give the novice her first real test. She looks tired. Light, who wouldn’t be, after this long of a lesson? It was as close to compassion as Mery came, but not enough for her to stop the lesson.

“Since it seems that saidar is no longer as slippery for you as an eel, let us see if you can do something with it besides simply holding it.” She said, and gestured for Kaimon to stand, rising smoothly as she did so. “You have probably noticed some small differences in the One Power, now that you have touched upon it enough times. You remember when we spoke of the five elements?” Kaimon nodded, and Mery continued.

“Your first task, then, is to create a little wind.” One eyebrow slowly lifted at the eagerness that painted the novice’s face. “A little wind, mind you. I do not want to be dealing with a gale where there is no sea.” That might have been considered a joke, coming from anyone else.

Embracing saidar, Mery wove a thin strand of Air, letting it whisk around the empty classroom as she had when they had first entered. By now, Kaimon should at least be able to see the weave, if not the glow that had sprung up around Mery.

“Remember. A small breeze. Now you try.”
