Possibly, bobO...
Mon Feb 5, 2018 7:20pm seems reasonable that LVC, now clearly earning the Big Bucks (and Lead roles) at the dawn of the Spaghetti Westerns' Golden Age -- and yes, I am punning off the "Golden" part of that -- that Lee wouldn't seriously consider a minor role in 1968.

However, Lee was also known for his loyalty, and never forgetting those who done him right.

So --- since you played a hunch, I'll offer my own:

My guess is that IF any of this is true (ANYthing to do with Leone -- esp. from the horse's mouth -- must be backed up with multiple reputable sources, as Leone himself bragged about making up his own personal history on a regular, that he lied a lot!)...

...*if* Leone did indeed reach out to LVC for a latter, minor role in OUTW or any other film, that Lee would've at least heard Leone out. If for no other reason than courtesy toward the man who finally helped Van Cleef reach major financial success in the film industry.

All this is conjecture, of course. ;) But fun to contemplate!

I have read Clint Eastwood was offered Harmonica which means he would be in the Bronson part but Clint turned Leone down saying he was through with that style and moving on. Lee said he turned down a ... more

I remember that interview very well--the Cox interview from May 1978. I agree that Lee probably wanted to avoid reverting back to the minor supporting parts he'd been doing since he started in the... more

If Leone had gotten Bob Wilke and Sheb Wooley instead of Jack Elam and Woody Strode, I think Lee would have done it. Either Leone lied about offering it to Clint, Eli & Lee or it was a second offer... more

But to me likely he was didn't want to say the part was too small. It's reasonable to guess it was that part because Lee was in the High Noon scene. Lee did say in the interview he would work for... more
