Wadi Gasus, Takelot III and JF's offer

Hello JF, Fred and All,

JF, an offer of help from you wld be appreciated concerning just the Broekeman paper. You stated that there were Four articles of deep interest to you in the more recent JEA issue. If you can, please feel free to let us know more about these articles. From your post, you seem genuinely excited about the contents of this new issue. Perhaps JEA 88 will contain a bountiful harvest of both new theories and discoveries concerning the New Kingdom or TIP Era. In contrast, I felt that the previous JEA issue was generally dry on new ideas and tended to concentrate instead on newer archeaological finds instead.

Ian's point on the possible dating of Wadi Gasus to Shabaka and Nimlot as enunciated by Morkot is well taken. Wadi Gasus(WG) could just as well be dated to Shabaka's reign since Amenirdis I succeded to the position of God's Wife during her brother reign. (I assume this means that she became the sole God's Wife since Shepenupet wld have died during Shabaka's 14-15 year reign) Whatever the situation here, Fred's suggestion that Year 19 of WG could belong to Kashta and Year 12 to Takelot III seems particularly tenous since Amenirdis I(Kashta's Grand daughter) 1)may Not have been born yet during Year 12 of Kashta or 2)she may have been just a child at this time--since she survived into Shabaka's reign at the very least.

My point here is why would Kashta appoint a mere child to such an important post at Thebes? Wouldn't he have had mature sisters or Daughters of his own from his own Extended Family to choose from? This is the main reason why I support the view of most Egyptologists here that the Year 12 at Wadi Gasus belongs to Piye since he at least would be expected to appoint his own daughter to this important position. From his point of view, he and Piye could then rule Thebes through Amenirdis I.

Fred, you mentioned that a paper concerning the possible dating of Papyrus Berlin 3048 to Takelot III's reign will be coming out in a few months time. Will this article be in your future GM paper that you have discussed a little about? I am just a little curious here. It wld be nice to read the article to see all the specific evidence for dating the Year 14 to Takelot III, rather than Takelot II, I suppose. BTW, do have a safe trip to Egypt and I hope you will enjoy your studies there. Who knows, you may even be able to monitor our Forum conversations from time to time from a local Egyptian CyberCafe!

The Year 3 Quay text that Broekeman speaks about wld have been made c.15-20 Years after the Year 6 QLT for Takelot III. Assuming Takelot III had a reign of 19 Years, his Year 19 minus his Year 6 wld... more
