Marissa grinned and kissed him quickly. This was okay. It wasn’t ideal. Most of what Marissa knew about the pureblood world was from people who didn’t agree with it or didn’t understand it. She knew plenty about dysfunctional families – Rose provided tons of information about that – and she knew all about failed betrothals. Arranged marriages seemed to fail more than succeed or cause a lot of misery if they worked out. Danny never talked about his family that way, though. Her understanding of pureblood society or whatever was skewed, and she knew that. But she also knew that they were teenagers, and whatever adult expectations were placed on Danny could wait for a little while.

They returned to an actual conversation about their relationship. It was made both easier and more difficult by their much closer proximity. It was harder to focus, but easier to think about exactly what they were saying.

Danny started to list how he was thinking of this whole thing. They weren’t a couple, so there were no obligations. He’d give the casual thing another try, at least until the summer. These were all things that Marissa really liked hearing, and they definitely matched with what she liked to do and be. But she knew Danny well enough to know that these things weren’t going to be easy for him. They had different views on all of this stuff.

If he was finding a middle ground, then she would too.

“Okay. Not a couple, no obligations, hella casual until the summer,” she repeated. The red head looked up at her Not Boyfriend and nodded a little, confirming for herself before adding to the list. “If one of us has an interest in doing anything with someone else, we should talk about it. And if one of us has a genuine reason for being uncomfortable with the other getting involved with that someone else, we respect that.” She nodded. This was something she could agree to. As far as she knew, her interest at this point was strictly limited to the Lyra in front of her, anyway. “Yeah. If you can be more casual, I can be less casual. We’ll balance each other out.”

“This is okay,” Danny affirmed. More than okay, really. His skin was thrumming, his heart thudding, his arms were around Marissa. ‘Okay’ was an understatement. Admittedly this didn’t exactly fit in... more

“Okay.” the syllable Marissa uttered elicited mixed feelings from the Lyra. Yes, he was exceptionally content to resume the decidedly not-platonic activities of their unconventional friendship, but... more

Suddenly, Danny didn’t seem as excited about their new arrangement as Marissa hoped he would be. Was it something I said? The red-head thought she’d come up with a good compromise. She couldn’t help... more
