This was definitely not for the better

Connor was still crying a little bit but he was no longer actively being punched, so his tears were starting to subside, although his sniffling wasn’t. He was embarrassed to be crying in front of the entire commonroom like this. If he were being completely honest, now that things had started to subside Connor was feeling embarrassed about the other part as well. He knew that he shouldn’t get into arguments like that, and yet he had let Drew bait him. And Connor was older, so it was his job to serve as a better example and he definitely hadn’t done that. So now he was crying and embarrassed and his eye was swelling (he was sure of it now) and in trouble in front of everyone, and he definitely wasn’t a good example to anyone.

When Professor McKindy let the two boys down, Connor trudged into his office as directed, taking a moment to surreptitiously wipe his nose on the back of his hand. He hoped nobody would notice, but he didn’t have a tissue and he suspected that Professor McKindy wasn’t going to hand him one. And maybe he would stop sniffling so much this way.

And then Professor McKindy started talking and Connor realized that everything was much worse. A suspension? With Professor Blair? Connor honestly didn’t know which part of that combination was worse. And Drew didn’t have to go to Professor Blair, although Connor was glad that he at least was getting suspended too. And they had lost 30 points from Cetus each? It was not a good day for Connor at all, and he felt that it was patently unfair for him to be punished like this. Perhaps it was inappropriate for him to be calling a younger student names, but he had been attacked first, and Drew wasn’t even hurt. Connor was pretty sure he was going to have a black eye. It was unfair.

“I didn’t start the fight,” Connor objected emphatically. “Drew jumped on me out of nowhere and started hitting me, and then he kept hitting me and all I was trying to do was not get hit!” Tears were forming in Connor’s eyes again and he felt his nose start to run a little more. “It’s not fair for me to get a suspension too, and how come he doesn’t have to do a suspension with Professor Blair? This is - “ Connor tried to think of the word for it being unfair when someone treated someone else differently because they were related, but it wasn’t coming to mind, possibly because he was crying again. “It’s not fair,” he repeated.
